The International Ice Hockey Federation, or IIHF, holds an annual world championship tournament for the national teams. The tournament was first held in 1920. The final tournament is arranged for 16 national teams that play in the main division and there are four international divisions in total. The tournament starts with teams split into two blocks, A and B. Top four teams from both blocks continue to the playoff series whereas the dead last teams from both block drop to the first international division (second tier).
The event is traditionally held in late spring.
The world championship tournament for under 20-year-olds is commonly known as IIHF World Junior Hockey Championship or “World Juniors”. It works on the same principles as the world championship tournament for adults, but the number of participating teams is limited to 10. Regardless of its status as a junior tournament, it enjoys a surprisingly significant amount of popularity as many young participating prospects are scouted by professional leagues around the world. This also encourages the interest of all the top talents in the juniors. Hence, the skill level and ambition of the players is very high, similar to NCAA university basketball in the United States for example.
IIHF World U20 tournament is traditionally held every December, ending early after the New Year.
